Sandcastles Of Love Review By Sydell I. Voeller

Hi guys! Lily blogging here! I recently read a book called Sandcastles Of Love by Sydell I. Voeller. This is a book I read on my Kindle Fire, it is an ebook, not a print book.

WHAT I LIKED ABOUT THE BOOK: I liked the plot and the characters. It was cool and interesting. Girls swapping houses for the summer- interesting.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: I didn't like how the author didn't really talk about Monty much. I also felt like the beach summer romance theme has been used a million times. Not very clever. I also don't like the cover. A shirtless guy and a girl. Who knows who that is in the book. It could be Trish and Jeff, or Jeff and Logan, or Logan and Grant. Plus, I HATE covers that show peoples faces. That doesn't leave anything to imagine. I know the author probably didn't make her cover, but still.
MY FAVORITE CHARACTER: Logan. But if not Logan then probably Midnight, even though Midnight's a cat. But my second favorite human character would have to be Grant.
MY LEAST FAVORITE CHARACTER: Stacey. I never liked that girl much.....
MY FAVORITE SCENE: When Logan told Grant her true feelings for him. That was SO romantic!
MY LEAST FAVORITE SCENE: When Midnight ran away. I have a bunch of cats and if one of them got away I would be sobbing for DAYS, so I felt really bad for Trish and Logan.
WHAT AGE I WOULD RECCOMEND THE BOOK FOR: 11, maybe 12. There wasn't anything bad in the book I can recall except for I think Logan might swear a few short, quick times.
RATING OUT OF FIVE: Four stars. It was a pretty good read, it was pretty short though.

Divergent By Veronica Roth Review

Hi guys! This is Lily here! Despite having misprints in the book and having to exchange it for another one, I finished this book! I started it on Friday afternoon and finished the entire book (along with bonus materials and a preview of the next book) a few hours ago, Monday afternoon. And it's a thick book, so that can only tell you how much I loved the book- Divergent by Veronica Roth.

WHAT THE BOOK WAS ABOUT: Beatrice (Tris later on) lives in a future world, much like The Hunger Games sort of world. A dystopia. When you turn sixteen in this world, you go through a test to find out which faction you should join. The factions are groups of people who live in the same area of the future of Chicago. There is no more religion or anything like that, just factions. The factions are based what you think tore the old society apart. Example, one faction called the Abnegation, think that being selfish tore the old society apart. Anyways, so when Beatrice turns sixteen, she does the test and gets very unusual results. She then picks her faction and goes through training to be a member of that faction. But not everybody gets to be members. Some people will live factionless.... which is sort of like today's version of a hobo.
WHAT I LIKED ABOUT THE BOOK: I liked almost everything. Veronica Roth, the author, described everything very nicely. Even though going through the training in that world, I would like to do it one day. And then be able to return back here. You know that you've read a good book when you want to meet the characters, and when you want to visit their world. Hopefully I will be cured with that in the future, because it's going to be a movie next year or the year after!
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE ABOUT THE BOOK: Just like in The Hunger Games, there were A LOT of side characters. I don't mind that because it makes it seem more real, but I don't like it because it's hard to keep all the characters straight. The authors also used the word/phrase/term "I bite my lip" A LOT! Beatrice would talk and then bite her lip, walk into a room and bite her lip,  I swear I don't know how the girls lip wasn't bleeding all the time! Also I got TWO misprinted copies, but oh well. It's not the authors fault, just the publishing comapnies.
MY FAVORITE CHARACTER: Oh gosh this is a hard one. Beatrice (Tris) because she's the main character. But I really like Christina, Tori and Four too.
MY LEAST FAVORITE CHARACTER: Eric. He's mean!
MY FAVORITE SCENE: Probably a scene that if I told you it, it would be a spoiler so I'm not going to say. But it's the last twenty five percent of the book! ;)
MY LEAST FAVORITE SCENE: The last few scenes of the book actually. I feel like they didn't explain why exactly everything was happening. I'm not going to ruin it, but I didn't really get why they were fighting. Maybe it's just me, but I didn't really understand it much.
WHAT AGE I RECOMMEND IT FOR: 12 or 13 and up. The book has A LOT of fighting and cruelness in it, even more then The Hunger Games. The people swear sometimes, and a few other things.
RATING OUT OF FIVE: Six! Excellent book, I cannot wait for the sequel to come out in May! I think I might die waiting......

Diary Of Ma Yan Book Review

Hi guys! This is Lily again! I recently read a book called Diary Of Ma Yan by Ma Yan. The book is actually a diary of a Chinese schoolgirl translated into English, so it's really cool.

WHAT THE BOOK WAS ABOUT: It was Ma Yan's diary so it was pretty much just about her life. Several times she was concerned she wouldn't be able to ever go to school again, several times she's starving of hunger, and her mother is sick. The book is really cool and it's really neat how it teaches you a lot about China.
WHAT I LIKED ABOUT THE BOOK: I liked that it was real and how it taught me about China, mostly Chinese currency. The publishers also stopped the diary every once in a while to explain somethings about China and Ma Yan's life and culture.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE ABOUT THE BOOK: Some things were kind of confusing and the book got very boring sometimes, since it was just a diary. Some days of your life are boring and some are interesting.
MY FAVORITE PERSON IN THE BOOK: Ma Yan of course.
MY LEAST FAVORITE PERSON IN THE BOOK: I don't know. I didn't not like any of them. Maybe one of her teachers that was mean? I don't really know.
MY FAVORITE SCENE IN THE BOOK: I'm not really sure. I liked a lot of scenes.
MY LEAST FAVORITE SCENE: When she was so hungry and didn't have any fen or yuan (money in China) to buy any food. That was so sad.
WHAT AGE I WOULD RECCOMEND THE BOOK FOR: Probably nine and up, maybe ten. There isn't anything bad in the book that I can recall, except one of her teachers is kind of mean and hits the students. Also it might be hard for some kids reading it to know how hungry she was, she was literally starving.
RATING OUT OF FIVE: Four stars. It wasn't awesome, but it wasn't bad either.

Well that's all for now. Sorry the cover picture is so blurry! :)

Exodus By Julie Bertagna Book Review

Hi guys! This is Lily posting! :) I recently read a book called Exodus by Julie Bertagna.

WHAT THE BOOK WAS ABOUT: Mara, the protagonist in the book, is living in the year 2099. All of Earth's ice caps have melted or on the verge of melting. The last island left is Mara's and the sea is about to take that too. She is forced to take some of the residents of her island to safety- a new city the sky- a place called New Mungo.
WHAT I LIKED ABOUT THE BOOK: I liked the beginning of the book how Mara was describing that computers were ancient and how different the world could be in less then 100 years.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE ABOUT THE BOOK: To be honest, I didn't like most of it. I'll just sum up some of the things that I didn't like. The names were horrible and terribly confusing. For any of you that have read The Hunger Games, I know you're thinking how could the names be any worse, but listen to these: Candleriggs, Gorbals, Wing, Caledon, Treenester, Tain, Tony Rex,Pollock Halfgood? It was very confusing. I also didn't like how it started off as dystopian fiction, but then sort of morphed into a fantasy novel. It was very weird. Also the writing just plain out wasn't very good.
MY FAVORITE CHARACTER:  Mara probably, maybe Tain? Possibly even Wing.
MY LEAST FAVORITE CHARACTER: Candleriggs! I just hate that name! But otherwise probably Tony Rex.
MY FAVORITE SCENE: The ones in the first few pages.
MY LEAST FAVORITE SCENE: Most of the rest of the book, but mostly the last one.
RATING OUT OF FIVE STARS: Two. It just flat out wasn't a very good book, at least to my opinion.
AGE I RECOMMEND IT FOR: Ten and up probably. Maybe even nine. There's nothing bad in the book I can remember except for a one or two sentence murder towards the end of the book. But it is very confusing and really makes you think hard about the future of our planet.

Well that's all for now, but you can expect a review on the book Divergent by Veronica Roth coming up soon! I just picked it up today and am already loving it!

Yours Truly, Lucy B. Parker, Sealed With A Kiss Review

Poppy here! I just read another book and I will tell you about it.

WHAT THE BOOK IS ABOUT: Lucy B. Parker's frister (friend\sister) is going on set to shoot a movie. And Lucy goes with her. Lucy has some fun times and not so fun times like when Laurel starts acting all superstar-ish and she gets ignored. But what will she do when she finds out that a big superstar has a crush on her?
WHAT I LIKED: Again I liked how it basically sounded like realistic. Just the way that the author wrote the book I guess.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: I liked everything. I have no complaints.
FAVORITE CHARACTER: I like Lucy. She just seems to talk and think the same way that girls do today.
LEAST FAVORITE CHARACTER: I don't like the "pap" (papparazi) at all. Their always snapping embarrassing pictures of Lucy when she's with Laurel.
FAVORITE SCENE: I thought it was funny how she freaked out because she had blue hair.
AGE I RECOMMEND: I would say 11 or 12. Because they do talk about how she has a crush.
RATING OUT OF FIVE STARS: 5!!

Girl vs. Superstar, Your Truly, Lucy B. Parker By: Robin Palmer Review

Hey everyone! Poppy here! And I'm going to tell you about the book I just read.

WHAT THE BOOK WAS ABOUT: When Lucy B. Parker gets friend dumped right before school starts, she figures life can't get much worse. But then her mom announces that she's dating Laurel Moses' dad. THE Laurel Moses - The TV movie-music star whose face is one the cover of every magazine. Suddenly Lucy's life is turned sideways! Up until now, her main goal has been to just get through the day without totally embarrassing herself. And now she's going to be the less-pretty, less-talented stepsister of the most famous girl in the world.
WHAT I LIKED: Mostly everything.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: I didn't really like that it wasn't that realistic.
AGE I RECOMMEND: 11 or 12 I guess.
RATING OUT OF FIVE STARS: 3 and a half.

You Shouldn't Have To Say Goodbye By: Patricia Hermes Review

Hey Everyone!! Poppy here! I will tell about the book I just read.

WHAT THE BOOK IS ABOUT: When Sarah and her best friend get bored, they always ask Sarah's mom what they should do. One day when Sarah hugs her mom and thanks her for giving them an idea, her mom winces. This is the first sign. As Sarah's mom battle's cancer, Sarah learns about the important things in her life. But when it's to late, what will Sarah do?
WHAT I LIKED: I liked that it was super realistic but very sad.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: I didn't like I almost cried. Sometimes, people that don't have bad things in their life take this life for granted. What we don't realize is that people die every day.
AGE I RECOMMEND: 11 is probably a good age.
RATING OUT OF FIVE STARS: 5 stars. I liked this book which is why I gave it five stars.

A Bride For Pastor Dan By: Katie Crabapple Review

Poppy here! I recently read this book and I will tell you about it!

WHAT THIS BOOK WAS ABOUT: Dan has been looking for a wife since he got out of pastor school. Anna is a woman who thinks that she is a girl who has nothing to offer to any man especially Pastor Dan. But what happens when he proclaims his love for her, will she accept him or run away?
WHAT I LIKED: I liked that it was a super short read. I think it was 15,000 words.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: I didn't like that the story just left you hanging. That annoys me when authors do that.
AGE I RECOMMEND: It depends on what your mom or dad says. It doesn't have anything inappropriate and it doesn't have any swear words.
RATING: Well, since it kind of made me mad that it left me hanging then I say it is a 3 stars.

WHAT I LIKED ABOUT THE BOOK:  I liked that she was best friends with a boy and she didn't like have a crush on him or anything.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: Again I didn't like that when someone would think something it would do the slanty thingy like this.

A Very Special Delivery Review

Hey everyone! Poppy here!  I recently read a book called: A Very Special Delivery By: Linda Goodnight.

WHAT THE BOOK WAS ABOUT: Ethan Hunter is a single man with a growing baby. Meanwhile, Molly Mcrieght is a woman who's family fell apart when tragedy decided to strike. Her Great Aunt Patsy is the only one who will speak to her. But when an ice storm leaves Ethan and his little baby, Laney stranded with no where to go, will Molly let go of her fear or will she let it take over her?
WHAT I LIKED: I like that they all seemed real and it was kind of like they were talking to you.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: I didn't like how almost every time that they would talk, the author didn't say who was talking. Like: "I know." It knid of bugged me.
MY FAVORITE SCENE: When, Ethan was in the easter play. He's sopossed to be all big and muscley.
RELIGION: Christian
AGE I RECOMMEND: 11 or 12 I guess. Whatever your parents say. They don't say any bad words or anything.
RATING OUT OF FIVE STARS: Probably 4 and a half.
Well that's all!

Sunday, March 4, 2012

Hi everyone! It's Lily here! Recently I read a book called Skinny: A Novel by Laura L. Smith.

WHAT THE BOOK IS ABOUT:  Melissa is your average teenage girl. She's on the dance team and wants to be team captain, so with tryouts approaching, she wants to look and feel her best. And she thinks that she needs to lose weight in order to do that. So she develops an eating disorder, except she doesn't realize its an eating disorder.
WHAT I LIKED ABOUT THE BOOK: I liked how this book addresses the growing problem of eating disorders in teens. I also like how real Melissa seemed, and how real the dialogue between the characters was.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE ABOUT THE BOOK: I didn't like how Melissa went from practically eating nothing to eating a whole pizza (or a whole pizza slice, something like that) it just didn't seem realistic. If you had an eating disorder, you would start small, right?
MY FAVORITE CHARACTER: Melissa, but she is the main characters. I liked some of her friends too, which I can't remember their names right now! But I did read this book like last week or the week before, so some of the names I can't remember!
MY LEAST FAVORITE CHARACTER: The dance coach. He seemed kind of rude. I also didn't like Beau in parts of the book.
MY FAVORITE SCENE: My favorite scene was probably when Melissa got help.
MY LEAST FAVORITE SCENE: My least favorite scene was probably when Melissa binged and purged (she threw up) that pretty really disgusting.
WHAT AGE I RECOMMEND THE BOOK FOR: 11 or 12. Eating disorders are a serious issue, so I don't think kids younger then 11 or 12 would understand it and might even be a little scared by them, or just wouldn't get why they are so serious.
RATING OUT OF FIVE STARS: Four stars. The book was really good, but because of the reasons I gave in the 'WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE' section, made me rate it five stars.

Well that's all for now!

Lily

Color Me Dark: A Dear America Book Review

Poppy here! I just read a book called Color Me dark. And I will do a review on it for you.

WHAT THE BOOK WAS ABOUT: Nellie Lee Love is an eleven year old girl that is growing up in 1919. As she grows up and matures, she learns why some of the white people do to colored people. when the war ends, she faces some sad things that happen to colored people in her family.
WHAT I LIKED: I liked that instead of having the author write scenes, she wrote diary entries. Because then it feels like the girl is talking to you instead of the author.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: Not a lot really.
MY FAVORITE SCENE: When the aunt pulled people from the street into the grand opening of the funeral home.
AGE I RECOMMEND: Probably 11 and up. There is a person who gets stoned because he crosses the "line".  And the girl talks about people getting beat up and shot and stoned.
RATING OUT OF FIVE STARS: Five stars. I really liked this book and I recommend it to anyone who  is looking for a good read the you can't put down.

A Very Special Delivery By: Linda Goodnight Review

Ivy here! I read a book on my Kindle Fire called A Very Special Delivery By: Linda Goodnight. It was free.

WHAT WAS THE BOOK ABOUT: Molly McCreight has a fear of all small children, the fear started 2 years ago when her 6 month old nephew died in her care. Of course she didn't kill him, she loved him with all her heart, but her family blamed her for his death. Everyone except her great Aunt Patsy. One night when a ice storm breaks out, a UPS guy comes to her door with his infant daughter. Ethan Hunter has a delivery to make and it has to be quick, he needs Molly to say yes to leave Laney, his daughter in her care while he makes the delivery. The delivery is made, but Ethan's van it gets stuck in ice. After spending 5 days with Ethan and baby Laney, Molly wants these people gone from her life. She was fine living her life,   alone, without love or God. But as Ethan and Molly fall in love, Molly realizes on what her panic attacks have been keeping her from. She not only grows with God but also with love. She reconciles with her sister, the Mother of baby Zack that died in Molly's care, and becomes part of her family again.
WHAT I LIKED: Everything, the author told the story well. I loved the character.
WHAT I DID NOT LIKE: I'm not sure, maybe that some parts aren't realistic.
WHAT WAS MY FAVORITE SCENE: When she holds Laney and isn't scared.
WHAT WAS MY LEAST FAVORITE PART: How mean her sister was. Her son died from SIDS not from not being cared for by Molly.
WHAT WOULD I RATE THIS BOOK OUT OF 5 STARS: 5 stars! It was such a good book.
The only thing I might not recommend about this book is if your not religious or anything, this book might be a little weird for you to understand.

They haven't spoken months, but in the magazine Noah's wearing he bracelet Ryan gave him. she can't help wondering what that means... not that she wants him back or anything. No, Ryan's plan is to make the most of her senior year. After all, she's popular, funny, a talented photographer... she's got a lot going for her. so it's not all about losing weight or gaining a boyfriend. It's about getting what she wants. And it's about time.
WHAT I LIKED: That her best friend was sort of overweight too. And the characters were described well too.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: That all she thought about was if people didn't like her because she was fat.
FAVORITE SCENE: The End!!!!
LEAST FAVORITE SCENE: When she got yelled at, at her class that she was going to.
AGE I RECOMMEND FOR THE BOOK: 11 and up probably.
RATING OUT OF 5 STARS: 2. It wasn't my favorite book.
